Air conditioning: planning permission or permitted development?

Sevda Kucuk · 4 August 2026

Installing an air conditioning unit, external condenser or air source heat pump may fall under Permitted Development rights or require a full planning application, depending on the property and the position of the external unit.

AVA Home Design advises on and submits planning applications for air conditioning units, external condenser units and air source heat pump systems.

Whether you need permission comes down to the property, its location, and where the external unit is going. Some installations sit inside permitted development rights; others need a full application. We assess the proposal and tell you which before you order anything.

The rules differ again between a house, a flat and a commercial property, and a flat is usually the hardest case.

We work with owners across Hillingdon, Uxbridge and the surrounding London areas on air conditioning and external plant. If you are planning an install, ask us which route applies before the unit is on site.
